Isn’t it a bit funny that the person who gave us the story of the One, Aristophanes, was a comedian, the godfather of comedy, in fact? The famous myth about humans once being split in half and searching for their other half appears in Plato’s Symposium as part of a humorous speech. In many ways, it was meant as a joke, which might explain why the idea itself can feel a bit absurd when taken as literal truth.
If you actually study history, the rise of strict monogamy has more to do with material conditions than destiny. The shift from nomadic hunting and gathering to settled agriculture created property, inheritance, and lineage concerns. Societies began organizing around passing land and wealth through specific family lines, which led to tighter control over sexuality and reproduction, especially women’s. Relationship structures that had once been more flexible and communal were gradually replaced by systems designed to guarantee paternity and inheritance.
From a broader biological perspective, humans, like many mammals, show a mix of bonding and non-monogamous tendencies rather than strict lifelong exclusivity. So in some ways it is almost comical that we built an entire cultural mythology around the idea that there is exactly one person meant for us. Then we act surprised when monogamous relationships struggle under that pressure.
I only know Bexes and Quinns who are polyamorous. I swear every poly community has at least one poly Dan.

That systems-thinking language got popular in poly spaces through the 90s and 2000s, heavily shaped by sci-fi fandom, tech culture, and futurist communities. Science fiction didn't invent the word itself, but it absolutely influenced the kind of metaphors people reached for: networks, constellations, ecosystems, molecules rather than pairs.
And a lot of early polyamory thinking was genuinely inspired by Robert Heinlein. His novels repeatedly explored group marriages, non-exclusive bonding, and decentralized family structures, especially in Stranger in a Strange Land and The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress.
